Can’t Sleep

I don’t know what’s up with me lately. My nights are filled with fitful sleep with strange nightmares that make me thrash and scream and sweat. When not in REM sleep, I emit an uncharacteristic snore so loud it wakes and keeps Schentel up. Over the course of the last 10 days I’ve been getting progressively more exhausted, stumbling through my waking hours.

Is it a bug? Stress? There is stress in my life, of course.

Remembering a Forgotten Prayer

“Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne came on the radio and instantly catapulted me back decades to a time when it wasn’t the Prince of Darkness playing the song but rather a small town Florida band named Forgotten Prayer (previously Xavier).

All these years later, “Crazy Train” still does that to me; so does “Detroit Rock City.” I don’t hear Ozzy and Kiss, respectively. I hear Brad Parker wailing on the lead guitar, Johnny Capuana thrumming the bass, the young drum prodigy Jay pounding the skins, and Kyle Fuqua belting out the lyrics on the brand…

Absolutely hilarious video parodying the Snuggie blanket with sleeves.

Big thanks to Terry White for posting it on Facebook.

In Loving Memory of Dakota “Cody” Tyler

Schentel wrote:

Please help us in saying good bye to a dear friend and furry son. Last night at 7:00 pm our beloved family dog Cody was killed, when he was struck by a car just outside our Oregon home in Hillsboro. Neighbor’s friends and strangers alike all came to his aid last night in trying to get him to the animal hospital. A very kind stranger “Brie” that just happened to be passing by took Cody and I to the vet hospital, while Pariah followed in our car. When we arrived the Doctor cared for him the best that she could, but it was to no avail, he had already passed. The doctor said tha…

Evening at the E.R.

We spent the evening at the St. Vincent’s emergency room. Everything’s fine (now). Nothing serious.

The adventure began at 3:30 Pacific, and we got home not too long before 11 o’clock. We watched a couple of DVRed episodes of “Dexter,” and then dropped unconscious into bed.

The St. Vincent’s E.R. staff was great, though I doubt anyone ever accused them of being too fast. :-)

I’m Worth $2,931,798

According to an odd little online survey I am, as a human on the open market, apparently worth $2,931,798. That isn’t bad equity in myself. Hmm… I wonder if I can borrow against that…

I’ll have to send a PDF of the results to my bank loan officer.

Here’s how HumanForSale.com computed my worth.

Saw Phantom of the Opera

We saw Phantom of the Opera opening night (Wednesday) at the Keller Auditorium. Box 8, centerstage, fantastic seats. I’ve been dying to see Phantom on stage since the mid-80s. When it came to Portland I jumped on it. Wonderful performance! Everything I’d hoped it would be!

Missed Crue Fest, But Did the Beach

[sigh] I really wanted to go to Crue Fest this past Saturday night–Motley Crue, 6A.M., Buckcherry, other bands–but couldn’t. We had reservations at Newport Beach for the weekend (it was a great time) and celebrated (a belated) Lugnasadh on the sand Saturday night. Sunday was window shopping in Newport Beach, Lincoln City, and surrounding towns. Also went to the Crystal Wizard where everyone in our group spent way too much money.

Wednesday: Phantom of the Opera opening night!

Countdown to Stop Snoops

This, I would think, would work just as well for co-workers prone to peering over the cubicle wall or checking out one’s computer over one’s shoulder.

Have you ever sat on a plane, next to an irritating traveler who keeps talking to you, snooping at everything you read, etc.? Next time, follow these instructions:

1. Quietly and calmly open up your laptop case.
2. Remove your laptop, and open it.
3. Start up.
4. Make sure the guy annoying you can see the screen.
5. Close your eyes and tilt your head up to the sky. Take a very deep
breath…
6. Then hit this link

Pilot Humor

After every flight, pilots fill out a form called a gripe sheet, which conveys to the mechanics problems encountered with the aircraft during the flight that need repair or correction. The mechanics read and correct the problem, and then respond in writing on the lower half of the form what remedial action was taken, and the pilot reviews the gripe sheets before the next flight. Never let it be said that ground crews and engineers lack a sense of humor. Here are some actual logged maintenance complaints and problems as submitted by Qantas pilots and the solution recorded by maintenance enginee…

It’s About Me, Not About Pariah S. Burke

I began this blog to share my thoughts and feelings; it’s a place for me to vent. That was years ago, before the “blog-olution” and the idea that a blog is a mandatory component of every good marketing campaign. This site was never part of marketing Brand Me. This is my personal blog, but for someone in my industry no part of the Internet is personal.

It’s a fact: if you do business with someone like me, you Google the person’s name before–and sometimes during–the professional relationship. Wherever a name like mine appears, in whatever context, c…

Ghost Rider Review

This past Friday, Strawberry Blonde and I surprised Mojo by checking her out of school to go see Ghost Rider on opening day. Mojo, whose grades had been suffering the first part of the year, worked hard and brought D’s and F’s up to A’s and B’s in the last grading period, and seeing the movie was her reward.

While I’m at it, here’s a quickie review of the film:

Ghost Rider was a fun ride, but jarring leaps in scenes, character development, and logic were disorienting. Willing suspension of disbelief couldn’t be maintained because every few minutes I f…

Keith Olberman on Bush’s Plan to ‘Sacrifice’ 20k U.S. Troops

MSNBC’s Keith Olberman speaks directly to Mr. Bush about the BBC news report stating that Bush will announce the commitment of 20,000 more U.S. troops to Iraq.

It’s a powerful, empassioned response that sums up the frustrations many of us feel.

Watch Here.

My Cat Farted

I’m not one for bathroom humor, but this is extra special, and simply must be shared.

This afternoon I was holding and petting my cat, Chloe. As is often the way, I held her like a baby–on her back, cradled in my arms. While my left arm supported her weight, my right upper arm acted as foot rest for her hind paws. Suddenly she gently pushed my arm away a bit, spread her hind legs slightly, let her tail droop away, and… farted. Pvrhhtt.

It was hysterical!

I have never before heard (or smelled) Chloe flatulate, yet she did it today–in my arms, no less!
