- Freelancers: Don’t forget your 2009 tax credit — self-employed workers who make less than $75,000 a year in adjusted gross income are eligible for the Making Work Pay tax credit for the 2009 tax year, a benefit of up to $400. (If you file jointly and earn less than $150,000 combined, the benefit maxes out at $800.) As an added bonus, this tax credit will be available again for the 2010 tax year.
