pdfaPilot Kicks Off

PRESS RELEASE

Berlin, December 20th, 2006. Precisely in time for the new year, callas software is shipping its completely new kind of tool for the long-term archiving of legacy PDF files to its retailers: the pdfaPilot. The innovative software program allows users working in archives, public authorities and companies to quickly and securely check existing PDF files and convert them to PDF/A files that conform to the standard.

The pdfaPilot, a plug-in for Adobe Acrobat Standard and Professional (version 6, 7 and 8), is specially designed for users who need to quickly check whether existing PDF documents can be archived as PDF/ A. When starting the plug-in in Acrobat, pdfaPilot automatically analyzes if the document that has been opened in Acrobat conforms to the PDF/A standard or whether it is a PDF/A file already. PDF files that do not conform to the standard can be checked for PDF/A standard compliance at the touch of a button. Readily understandable verification reports inform the user at every step of the verification process whether and how the existing PDF file can be corrected and converted to a PDF/A file. The cutting-edge tool is therefore able to solve given conversion and archiving problems on many occassions, e.g. by re-embedding missing fonts. Adobe Photoshop CS3 Goes Public (Beta)

Adobe has always played its cards close to the vest, refusing to comment about upcoming products or product updates, and never committing to firm release dates. Any such information released to the public could affect Adobe Systems, Incorporated stock prices, and is therefore closely guarded by Adobe and Federal Trade Commission regulations. Over the nine months, however, Adobe has been breaking tradition to dole out secrets.

It began in a March 2006 interview with Forbes Magazine wherein CEO Bruce Chizen committed to a 2nd Quarter 2007 release of Creative Suite 3. Next, in May 2006, following the release of competitor QuarkXPress 7 to critical praise, Adobe allowed select members of the press, including Quark VS InDesign.com, to reveal features of InDesign CS3 (see: “Sneak Peek: InDesign CS3”). Now, they’ve kicked open the vault door wider still.

Despite conflicting announcements expected from today’s Adobe Systems, Inc. fourth quarter fiscal 2006 earnings conference call with shareholders, Reuters reports Chizen has having stated that Adobe will ship “the biggest release in Adobe’s history” at the end of 2Q2007, which could be as late as June 1.

Ugh! I Should Have Done That on a Master Page!

One of the really nice things about InDesign is its liberal policy of undo/redo. It invites experimentation.

Ever experiment yourself into wishing you’d started on a master page instead of a document page? Say, maybe you put together the perfect page, using objects on multiple layers, but want to apply it to the whole document? You could select all (CMD+A [CTRL+A]), turn on Paste Remembers Layers (Layer palette menu), create a new master page (New Master from the Pages palette menu), then Paste In Place (CMD+OPT+SHIFT+V [CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+V]).

Stop Runaround by Layers

When runaround is set on boxes, it will, by default, push around overlapping text on any layers below the current. Often, that’s the way we want it. However, layers have been a means of experimentation, of trying out different layouts risk-free. They’re also extremely handy for setting multi-lingual documents. In those cases, XPress’s habit of enforcing runaround across layers, even if the layer containing the runaround object is hidden, can be a real pain in the neck.
