  • You’re Not a Brand; You’re a Person

    Seventeen years ago, Tom Peters argued in a Fast Company arti­cle that to suc­ceed in the new world of work, we’d all have to define and defend a “per­son­al brand.” We’d be known for one thing, under­stood in a glance at our web­sites, our rep­u­ta­tion and iden­ti­ty neat­ly pack­aged in a con­cept that employ­ers could eas­i­ly grasp, just like con­sumers see­ing a logo. Peters’ idea – far more com­plex and rea­son­able than what it’s now under­stood as – was not entire­ly new but its tim­ing was per­fect, as the world was just get­ting online. In no time, “per­son­al brand­ing” went from edgy to con­ven­tion­al wis­dom. But some­thing was lost along the way: we let the brand become more impor­tant than the per­son. Ultimately, “per­son­al brand­ing” is as oxy­moron­ic and as dan­ger­ous­ly reduc­tive an expres­sion as cor­po­rate personhood.
