Editor & Publisher: Two Ways Weeklies Adopted Adobe

Two weekly publisher organizations moved from Quark to Adobe; E&P article highlights the journey

Recently, two weekly publishers transitioned from Quark to Adobe.

Most sites running XPress stayed at version 4.11, because there was nothing new that was useful in version 5 and 6.

One, Metroland Printing, Publishing & Distribution Ltd., is Canadian company that publishes 65 titles in 110 editions weekly. Impressed by InDesign’s integration with Photoshop, and disappointed with QuarkXPress (“Most sites running XPress stayed at version 4.11, [Metroland IT director Steve Levant says], because there was nothing new that was useful in version 5 and 6.”).

Starting with InDesign and training from Adobe, they have moved toward fully adopting the Creative Suite. It is expected that 80% of their conversion to be complete by the end of 2005.

Meanwhile, on Long Island, The Southhampton (N.Y.) Press moved from QuarkXPress to a TruEdit workflow, a solution that integrates InDesign and InCopy.

The various technologies in play (Metroland uses Macs, Southhampton PCs) and the mixture of news and insight make this article a worthwhile read.
