These are the articles, blogs, and resources I found interesting and worthy of sharing for 08 May 2009 through 13 May 2009:
- Contrary to popular belief, Twitter was invented in 1935. – The Next Web – Robot Messenger Displays Person-to-Person Notes In Public
Source: Modern Mechanix (August 1935) - What kind of open are you looking for? – Seth Godin – If you hear someone talking about “open source,” it’s quite possible that this isn’t what they mean. One major soft drink company, for example, was talking about turning their brand open source. Pretty unlikely. Do you think that they meant allowing anyone to use their brand in any way they chose on a share and share alike basis? As change swirls around, the terms matter.
Mike sent me a list of different types of open. I amended as below:
- Web Embedding Allowed | Typophile – Help create the list of pioneering foundries who are not afraid of the digital future. (Did that sound like an agenda? Oops.)
- ‘Make it Big’ by Blogging an interview with Jeff Fisher and Sheri L Koetting – Have you ever considered starting your own blog but then decided not to because of the time and effort involved? After all, who has time to create and update a beautifully designed site, on top of attending to work-related tasks?
Well, two notable design industry professionals, Jeff Fisher and Sheri L Koetting, say it’s an activity you can’t afford to pass up, especially for those looking to land a job in this tough business climate. Blogs, they say, are one of the most powerful self-promotional tools available to help creative professionals market their skills and talent.
- Project Scheduling – 14 Designers Share Their Advice — Workflow: Freelance – Given the complexities of the various phases of the web design and development process – including many variables often revolving around pending client feedback – I have often wondered how other web designers go about scheduling their own projects.
- Typeface != Font — Jon Tan ? – A typeface is not a font. A font is not a typeface. It’s been said before, but confusion still resigns supreme
- Creating an Elevator Speech: How Looking In The Mirror Can Help Your Business | Freelance Folder – One of the most effective ways to get new clients is through face-to-face contact. Those in your existing social circle and new acquaintances can both lead you to new clients — as long as you can describe your freelancing business to them quickly and accurately.

- TypeTalk: Ambigrams | CreativePro.com – Ambigrams come in many forms. The most common ambigrams are symmetrical, and include rotational (upside-down), bilateral (viewed in a mirror or from behind), chain (continuous words, such as in a circle or a spiral), and totem (vertical and mirror-image symmetry). Less common are asymmetrical ambigrams, which have more complicated characteristics.
- Color Tools, Resources and Tutorials for Photoshopers – This article is a roundup of some of the best new applications, resources, articles, and tutorials for choosing a color scheme for your project.
- Why you should tell Facebook “what’s on your mind” – Until recently, I answered them only sporadically. “How frivolous, I thought, and what a waste of time.” Now I realize how wrong I was.
It all started with a freak accident. A few weeks ago, a speeding bicyclist struck me as I got off a bus in Boston. Something (maybe the painkillers) made me think it would be a good idea to mention it on Facebook. That post led to a raft of well wishes (always nice when you’re feeling crappy). But one of them made me sit up and take notice – painful as that was.
- Twitter Down, World Stops — I Am Pariah – In a world that is increasingly becoming defined by 140 characters, is there life without Twitter? Has it become “I tweet, therefore I am”? And, if one cannot tweet, does one therefore no longer exist?
