Creative Community Bulletin 17 June 2009 Through 19 June 2009

These are the articles, blogs, and resources I found interesting and worthy of sharing for 17 June 2009 through 19 June 2009:

  • 35 Amazing (and Often Creepy) Photo Manipulations by Aaron Nace – Aaron Nace is a photographer and digital artist. His main focus with his work is portraiture, and he tries to create images that are more than just technically well done, he wants them to impact the viewer emotionally. He is very much into creating images using all the tools available, including lighting, costuming, set design, […]
  • Pictaculous – A Color Palette Generator
  • 34 Free and Elegant TrueType Mini Pixel Fonts – If you have ever tried to make a font very small (usually, anything below 9px), and it becomes unreadable, you are in need of a specially designed mini font, and this post is for you.Mini-Pixel fonts have and are very popular within Flash applications, but sadly under used everywhere else. Even though, there is no denying Mini pixel fonts have an air of elegance about them.
  • Are You Tweeting Away Prospects? – Unfortunately, many freelancers, particularly, have seized upon the concept of “social media networking for business” without taking the time to find the appropriate boundaries between “social” and “business.” This is in part because people who do, say, copywriting or website design tend to be “early adopters” of new tools and technology.
  • Marketing Tips from Adolf Hitler – Why in the hell would we want to be like Adolf Hitler? Because he did his campaigning the right way and there are a few things we can learn from him and apply to the marketing that we do for our businesses. Now you might be apprehensive about reading this article, seeing as how Adolf […]
  • Magazine Start-up Costs – Discussion – I know this will probably return more questions than answers, but what does it cost to start a magazine these days? I’m talking about a national consumer publication, gloss cover and coated paper, maybe 75 pages of editorial, most art and photos supplied with a circ. of about 300,000? I don’t have answers to distribution, sales, marketing, etc. I’m looking for a very ballpark figure on the hard costs to create a design template, editorial calendar, etc. for issue No. 1.
  • Comparing the Average Costs to Print a Magazine Against the Costs of Publishing Digital Issues, a Discussion – Hope this starts a good open debate. Let’s start by asking what the average cost is to actually print 1 physical issue of a magazine. Next we then look at how much the average print circulation totals per month for example, and then we compare that to the costs of digital.
  • Who Said That Magazines are Dead? – FOLIO: mediaPRO – I know that what I’m going to say is controversial but my personal view is that magazines are not just wonderful products but they are healthy products as well and with a great future! And I mean in print magazines.
