PRESS RELEASE
New and enhanced features provide value to publishing and marketing workflows; next generation preview demonstrates commitment to open standards and integrated solutions
NEUCHÂTEL, Switzerland – October 5, 2006 – Quark Inc. announced today that it will preview the latest update of its Quark Publishing System (QPS) at this year’s IFRA Expo and conference in Amsterdam from 9–12 October 2006 as well as a first look at new technology that will enable customers to implement even greater collaboration and open systems support in dynamic publishing environments.
Visitors to IFRA will see a demonstration of QPS 3.6 – the latest upgrade to the current QPS software. QPS is used around the globe by newspaper and magazine publishers, as well as marketing communications departments, to enable greater collaboration in the creative design and editorial process, significantly reducing the time to market for publications.
QPS 3.6 includes a number of new and enhanced features based directly on customer feedback, aimed at enhancing workflow and the production process. New features include redlining and AppleScript support, output styles support in QuarkCopyDesk, new output styles for exporting articles as XML and support for jump stories. These features are critical to magazine and newspaper publishers and corporate marketing groups that rely on QPS and will promote the collaboration and multichannel output demanded in an enterprise publishing solution.
Leading edge technology platform
Quark will also provide a first look at its next generation editorial workflow system that will support QuarkXPress 7 and is based on modern industry standard technologies such as Java and .NET, making it platform independent, database-independent, scalable and easier to integrate and implement.
“For existing QPS customers, the next generation QPS represents a monumental step forward, delivering modern, but proven, software technologies.†said Max Lyth, technical director at UK system integrator, Automatrix, who have been supplying and integrating QPS solutions for the past decade. “By taking an open standards approach to a brand new server architecture, system integrators and other software developers will be able to greatly improve interaction and information flow between editorial subsystems. This will enable customers to take a best of breed approach to their editorial workflow components with QPS at the centre.â€
Nearly 15 years since it was first released, QPS continues to lead the way in editorial workflow and collaboration. “At Quark we recognized the need to enhance the underlying technology in QPS to bring it inline and ahead of other workflow solutions on the market,†said Matthew Wallis, senior vice president of sales and marketing EMEA and Asia Pacific. “We believe that the new QPS will significantly lower the total cost of ownership for our customers and early feedback suggests we are on the right track.â€
Availability
QPS 3.6 is scheduled for release in Q4 of 2006. The next generation technology is slated for availability to system integrators and customers in early 2007.

Quark Partners at IFRA
Reflecting the strong support for Quark technology, the Quark booth will also feature a number of Quark partners including including e‑nvention, e‑pro solutions, QuickWire Labs, A & F Computer-Systeme, CoDesCo IT Consulting, Picdar, Markzware, and Easypress Technologies. These partners will be demonstrating complimentary solutions integrating with QuarkXPress, QPS and Quark Dynamic Document Server (QuarkDDS).
Markzware? Well I suppose they updated since their current version is not Xpress 7 compatible. Personally, we stopped upgrading Markzware after the switch to InDesign. We did buy their ‘Q2INDD’ plugin though.
I attended the Amsterdam conference years ago. Quark was showing their ‘latest & greates’ but forgot that all the Macintoshes there used USB. And there they were with their old dongel. It so represented the Quark company in the nineties: Please do not walk away. We found an old mac to show you oure software. Oh, and look! You can now create logo’s in QuarkXpress! First question to come out of the audience: “Were’s multiple undo?” I felt sorry for the sales guy…
